Unveiling the Value of Deconstruction: From Waste to Resource

From Waste to Resource

The construction industry is at a turning point with the pressing need for environmental sustainability. By adopting a circular construction model that emphasises the re-use of resources and recycling only when necessary, we can tackle significant challenges and move towards a more sustainable future.

Keeping sustainability goals in mind, the MacConvilles Building Surveying team visited Brighton Waste House last week. The objective was to explore how the construction sector can adopt a more sustainable construction approach while facing challenges and opportunities. Duncan Baker-Brown, the Waste House architect, Academic and environmental activist and Co-Chair of RIBA Climate Action Group, hosted the team and shared his insights on the building. He provided an insider’s perspective on sustainable building practices and spoke about the increasing number of successful, closed-loop construction projects, proving that carbon, cost, and time savings are not mutually exclusive and sharing his thoughts on expected changes in Building Regulations for the coming year.

“Designers and construction professionals hold immense influence over the environmental impact of their creations. We must build with deconstruction in mind, carefully considering carbon mileage, reusing materials from existing structures, and prioritising locally sourced and original materials. Our Quantity Surveyors play a pivotal role in this endeavour, guiding project teams towards sustainable practices and incorporating close-loop designs and procedures into contracts. By working together, we can make a profound difference in shaping a more sustainable future for the built environment.”

Toby Rollestone, MacConvilles Joint Managing Director.

MacConvilles remains dedicated to addressing the challenges and taking advantage of opportunities to adopt a more sustainable construction approach where sustainability is not just a goal but a shared reality.
