University of Sussex Network Replacement Programme
The University of Sussex’s Network Replacement Programme is a transformative, multi-year investment in campus-wide digital infrastructure. Designed to improve performance, security and sustainability, the programme is upgrading the wired and wireless network across the entire estate—without interrupting everyday university life.
MacConvilles are proud to be playing a key role in this estates project, delivering Building Surveying services that support the programme’s careful, phased implementation. Working across a live and operational campus, we’ve collaborated closely with university stakeholders to survey buildings methodically, with minimal impact on staff and students.
Our building surveyors were appointed to carry out a rolling programme of condition and technical surveys to inform room-specific design proposals. These surveys support the integration of new network infrastructure by confirming compliance with current standards and assessing space requirements for equipment, power, and ventilation.
In addition to the surveys, we are undertaking the design for concentration point (CP) and distribution point (DP) rooms to ensure they are compliant, functional, and fit for purpose, working closely with M&E consultants responsible for the installation design. The scope of each survey includes layout, structure, M&E provisions, fire safety, cable management, building defects, and areas of non-compliance. Outputs include an individual CP room asset card and a register of issues and constraints, with each room assigned a priority rating to inform a strategic, phased delivery plan.
Working around academic schedules requires careful planning, clear communication, and flexibility on-site. Our team worked closely with the estates and facilities teams to coordinate access and respond quickly to evolving timelines. A standardised survey template was introduced to ensure consistency across all outputs, support better collaboration with consultants, and keep the programme progressing smoothly.
Recognising the complexity of the mechanical and electrical elements, we brought in a trusted design partner with long-standing experience of the campus. Their knowledge of the campus has been instrumental in shaping technical solutions and maintaining momentum.
This is a live project, and our work is ongoing. We continue to support the delivery of a high-speed, future-ready network for the University of Sussex—one that will underpin teaching, research and sustainability goals for years to come.
