School of Life Sciences, University of Sussex
The refurbishment of the Life Sciences department at the University of Sussex has reinvigorated a previously cold, damp and dated building into a clean, modern and effective laboratory and teaching facility. Planned to precision by the MacConvilles team, the renovation of this campus facility dovetailed with busy university life, causing minimal disruption to staff and students.
MacConvilles have enjoyed a longstanding and positive working relationship with the University of Sussex since the early 1990s, providing a full range of Building Surveying, Quantity Surveying and Project Management Services. In supporting the university to make best use of their facilities, we partnered on a project to regenerate once functioning laboratory spaces, from unloved rooms used for storage, back into inspiring teaching, learning and office facilities. The principal challenge of the building was coordinating the safe removal of large quantities of asbestos, as well as modification of existing mechanical and electrical installations prior to the alterations and refurbishments. Taking on the roles of designers, building surveyors and cost controllers for this project, MacConvilles helped to design facilities that maximise the space available while achieving best value.
