Christ’s Hospital Theatre Refurbishment
Christ’s Hospital School embarked on the major restoration and modernisation of their Grade 2 star listed theatre back in 2019. Completed in 2020, this fully refurbished space ensures the venue can still act as a multi-purpose space that that can be adapted to suit any layout depending on the demands of the show being presented and can seat an audience of up to 500.
In 1974 a purpose-built theatre was created for the School as a space for teaching drama and presenting School productions as well as external productions. It was designed by the renowned architect Bill Howell, who was also the architect for the Young Vic.
After 45 years of great service, it was time for an upgrade. Theatre specialists, Theatretech, designed a scheme which completely overhauled the mechanical and electrical installations to enable state of the art stage lighting, audio and communications equipment to be installed. A new single storey foyer extension in the style of the original building creates a new welcoming entrance space at the front of the building and at the back, refurbished toilets, dressing rooms and back stage areas ensures both spectators and performers alike are well catered for.
