The Joy of Building Surveying.

Director Toby Rollestone has over 25 years’ experience in the building and surveying industry, making him a trusted source of help and advice when it comes to property repairs and maintenance. He now manages a team of expert dedicated surveyors and has many unique ideas when it comes to managing complex issues. Here he discusses the importance of treating every building as an individual.

Solving the Unsolvable

Just like the people that inhabit them, every building is unique, with its own maintenance requirements and its own set of maintenance issues. Even the most well-planned and executed of buildings will eventually require some form of updating or repair work. As surveyors at MacConvilles, we excel in finding solutions to the most individual of issues.

Solving Problems One Day a time

One of the best, but most challenging, aspects of our work is that every day is different. Each project will present issues requiring a very specific solution. We are required to be creative with our tools, as there is rarely a one-size-fits-all approach that will work.  It means we have to be able to think on our feet, using all our knowledge and experience to solve problems.

The way construction has evolved over the years presents us with some particularly interesting issues. The tools we use and the methods we employ in the construction world have changed dramatically. Sometimes our modern techniques just won’t solve the issue in an older home. There is also the challenge of maintaining the vintage or authentic style of a house, particularly if it is listed, as replacing any part of the building with a modern equivalent will look clumsy and may cause further defects.

Contemporary builds present their own challenges, which always require a careful strategy and technical intervention, which has become a specialist skill in itself.

Getting in early?

Of course, spotting a problem early makes it easier to fix and prevents a build-up of knock-on issues. It can also have the bonus of helping to keep the costs from spiralling out of control.

When looking at a problem, however, it is important to consider it as more than simply repairing the building – surveyors need to know how their influence can help to lengthen the lifespan of the structure and prevent issues in the future. In some cases, maintenance can be turned to improvement.

Surveyors also need to think about how the works will impact on the environment, both locally and on the earth as a whole. It is always important to consider the materials they use and the impact they have on our planet. This is something that MacConvilles are able to offer advice on.

The problems we find are due to a range of issues, including poor design, construction and material selection, although sometimes it is simply a case of deterioration over the years. On occasion, however, it can be down to something that the owner or occupier is doing, or not doing.

With a gentle and sympathetic approach, we can explain what has occurred and suggest ways in which to adapt and modify the way the building is occupied to help prevent the issue arising again.

Doing It for the People

It is the people who keep us motivated, after all. Helping the client to solve an issue that they may have thought was unsolvable gives us a great boost, as we are able to remove the weight they have been feeling on their shoulders. At MacConvilles, it is that opportunity to improve people’s lives that keeps us thriving, so we are always learning and always looking at problems from different angles, so that we can best serve our clients.

If you have noticed an issue in your property, don’t wait for it to get worse, as it will almost certainly cost you more to fix. Contact us at MacConvilles as soon as possible and let our expert knowledge and experience solve your problem.
