The renovation of the Maderia Terrace Lift copper roof was the crowning glory, completing the restoration project on this Grade II listed building.
Brighton and Hove City Council entrusted MacConvilles Surveying to undertake the complete refurbishment of this ornate roof securing the future of this historic building.
We love to be beside the seaside, but..
Walk along the seafront on a hot summer day or stormy winter evening and you can see the challenges seafront buildings face. Understanding the impact coastal weather has on building designs and materials is key to the success of any Brighton project. However, such challenges were no obstacle for our surveyor. Having more than 20 years experience working on Brighton’s listed buildings he was the obvious choice, ensuring the success of the renovation.
From the outset it was obvious the roof and supporting timber frame were in poor condition. Age related corrosion and and ad hoc repairs had damaged the copper causing the roof to leak and as a reasult the supporting timber frame had decayed.
It’s all in the Detail
Our surveyor’s keen eye and architectural background quickly spied faults in the original design. Therefore a new bespoke design was required. The new roof detailing using traditional materials eliminated previous weaknesses whilst securing its original apperance.
Safeguarding our heritage!
Working in collaboration with the copper roofing specialists and at the edge of what is possible, our surveyors specification delivered a beautiful roof which will ensure that no matter what our coastal weather throws, it will remain ship shape and water tight.
